What’s the first thought we get when we hear that a song has been remixed? Given the trends over the years, we’re almost certain that the thoughts sound something along the lines of “another song destroyed successfully.” We can’t blame you because most remixes kill the original song, which doesn’t and shouldn’t sit well with the fans of the original.

But what if we told you that there’s someone who creates remixes of various Indie songs that have been released over the years, while giving them a new life and audience? Meet Zain Calcuttawala, or Bulli Bainbridge, the wonderful sound artist who creates these remixes as a tribute to the lovable original songs in collaboration with their creators.

For the unversed, Zain is a sound engineer and music producer who has worked with some of the biggest names in the independent music scene, such as Shalmali Kholgade, Raghav Meattle, Dot. and so on. If you’ve watched Mehta Boys on Amazon Prime, he also produced the track ‘Jee Lu Main’ featured in the show.

Known as Bulli Bainbridge, he transitioned from a successful career in artist management and gig programming to a respected music producer. His early work at BlueFrog and OML saw him collaborate with international acts like Megadeth, Imogen Heap, and T-Pain. His debut album, “Seasons,” released in January 2023, earned critical acclaim, being named a Top 10 Indie Album by Rolling Stone India. Beyond music, Zain founded “Marbles Lost & Found,” a mental health awareness podcast, which has garnered recognition from publications like Vogue and the BBC Cultural Frontline.

Zain Calcuttawala (Bulli Bainbridge) created ‘Indie Remixed’ to celebrate Indian indie music. Initially an Instagram Reel series, it now includes full remixes on streaming platforms. He’s remixed songs by Kamakshi Khanna, Prateek Kuhad, and others, with ‘Ruby’ by Tejas which released on 28th February, 2025. This remix gives Tejas’ 10 year old song a melancholic and chilled-out feel!

Zain released his own adaptation of ‘Ruby ’, a splendid track from Tejas’s debut album, ‘Small Victories,’ which came out ten years ago and featured the original song. The best part is that he collaborated with Tejas and produced this remix of ‘Ruby’ and we can’t be more pleased with the heart and soul this remix carries!

Actually, ‘Ruby’ the remix is the complete version of one of Zain’s remixes that he made as part of his Instagram Reels series, ‘Indie Remixed’, a notable three-month project where he picked twelve indie and non-film songs released over the years in India and paid tribute to them by reimagining them in his own style.

You can check out the ‘Indie Remixed’ series here. So worth it, we promise!

Now, he has already released the full versions of three such exemplary remixes while collaborating with their original artists, which include “City Life” by Raghav Meattle, “Runnin’” by Shalmali Kholgade, and “Everybody Dances To Techno” by Dot. ‘Ruby’ is his fourth such remix, now available for streaming on all major platforms. You can check it out here.

Listen to Zain’s brilliant remixes here:

One of the greatest benefits of creating song remixes is that it actually freshens up the song for consumption by the new age audience while refreshing it in the minds of the old ones. This remix by Zain does exactly that, if not much more.

While Tejas’s original track was sardonic with mellow music and raw vocals, presenting a more acoustic vibe that perfectly carries the emotions of love, heartbreak, and longing, Zain’s remix has uplifted the song to another level. Honestly, we can’t compare the original and the remix because they’re the same, but yet, they’re both mutually exclusive in terms of uniqueness and vibe.

Originally, ‘Ruby’ features a faster pace than the remix, where the drums, guitars, and bass carry the song along with a very youthful, indie voice offered by the super talented Tejas. The song is still perfect for times when you just want to drown in the pain of unrequited love while lying on your bed, all alone in your room. Ten years later, his vocals have matured yet are fresh enough to keep the song’s soul intact.

Enter Bulli Bainbridge and his musical genius, which clearly shows in the rich soundscape he has woven in his reimagination of ‘Ruby’. He has slowed down the pace a bit and added those pleasant strings that carry the song like the wind under the wings of a bird. The layered music adorns the song like no one else could have imagined and we’re quite sure of.

Given that, ‘Ruby’s remix gives the original a whole new avatar that makes it a wonderful track to be played in a cafe as people unknowingly sway to the beats and vibe to it. It still has an undercurrent of melancholy, but with a more chill, relaxed vibe, just what the lo-fi loving people seem to like nowadays. When we say Bulli Bainbridge or Zain knows what he’s doing with remixes, we aren’t lying. Just by listening to the tracks, one can gauge how his remixes are open love letters to the original songs and their creators. The way he uses his creativity to recreate the music that truly uplifts the original while still showing his unique essence is genuinely commendable.

We know that remixes have been a topic of debate recently, but if you want to enjoy some fresh, genuine music that evokes nostalgia or makes you see your favorite songs in a new light, making them enjoyable and sonically palatable, then we would strongly recommend you to check out Zain Calcuttawala and his body of impeccable music work.
