‘Diana’ Harmonizes Love’s Ebb & Flow With Derek & The Cats And Frizzell

As you witness your love fading away, you might wonder if all is lost or if there’s a chance for revival. “Diana” takes this concept to the extreme, both musically and thematically, delving into the myriad phases one experiences during such times. Newsflash, yes one gets over the lack of love; and the way it is shown, as tastefully and with such excellent music, listeners hope if only it was this beautiful getting over someone. Yet the universe has its way of showing as Frizzell sings this sweet lullaby as her way of holding the listener’s hands and saying it’s going to get better.

Rarely do we encounter a subject as somber as love and loss, yet ‘Diana’ tackles it with a remarkable blend of grace, sass, and a tranquil demeanor that soothes the lingering melancholy. That is what makes ‘Diana’ special and the collaboration tastefully magnetic.

Derek & The Cats are a hidden gem in the Indian music scene, and it is a surprise how well and tight knit their compositions often are. The lineup of musicians all in their own right bring their distinct touch and flavor. Their arrangements always have the creative twist, having their listeners in a dichotomy of how well collaborative their art is while each instrument distinctly stands out, narrating and contributing to a larger story.

The band can easily grapple your attention, capture your attention and fixate you into their world. Jason Sharat on the drums and Joel Rozario with his percussion is as fluid as one could imagine, yet takes on the center stage as the entwined twins with the Saxophone by the talented Gautam David, in the second half. Gautam’s entry triumphs and adds a touch of brilliance that not only highlights their own skill but also sets the stage for the enchanting string section that follows. The base by Vishal Varier and the Guitar played by Adesh Vinod, omni present throughout the track is the flavourful accompanied by Derek Mathias & Anand Murali on the Keyboards. When a cadre of gifted musicians with such visionary zeal emerge, they not only shake up but also shape the musical terrain in India, painting it with their unique artistic foresight.

On top of everything that is right with this track comes Frizzell D’souza and her voice that is made for music focussing on mainstream rock and jazz. Frizzell’s voice is like a missing puzzle piece, seamlessly fitting into the music and reflecting her ease in this genre. Her presence in each project she has featured in, is an enchanting nod to her natural element. The recall value to the late 80s through “Diana” is something of a playful tease to those who realize it. One look at this track and you sure to sway and fall into the trance of the artists behind this. Just remember where you discovered them first!
