From Joy to Pathos: Eashwar Subramanian’s EP ‘The Reclusive Mural’ Explores Soothing Soundscapes

The album builds on the minimalist style of ambient music that Eashwar has honed over several past releases. Engaging a mix of piano, strings and synths, the album focuses on creating a soothing environment for the listener.

The Reclusive Mural is an ambient instrumental EP, consisting of 4 tracks. The album is a laboured effort that took an year to develop. The theme of the album is focused on solitary life, and captures a range of emotions from accepting oneself to pathos that surrounds the loss of a dear one.

The EP opens with “Joy of Being” – a track that captures the beauty of being alive, with soundscapes that blend a gentle piano based melody, with violin sections. The standalone melody is embellished with rhythms of the tabla that transports the listener to an oasis of lush green lands and gentle breeze. Mulling on the track, Eashwar says that the track included a tinge of delays and reverbs to create a moment of realization for the listener, which exudes plain joy through mere existence.

The second track of the EP- “Free Worlds” creates an ambience of silent woods, with gentle African rhythms and flute based interludes. The track transitions with a rousing string section and a distant vocal riff in the background. The track exudes a sense of freedom, and reminds one of a utopian world, where happiness is the sole emotion. The third track of the EP- “ Indian Winter” opens with synth arpeggios and syncopations that run in the background of the main violin melody. The track exudes a tinge of pathos, and chillness to convey the unpredictable winters of the Indian subcontinent. The track depicts the loneliness that one feels during winters, and seeks comfort by the fireplace and at the same time, brings in emotions for the people uncared for during the winters. The fourth and last track of the EP- “Young Sun” is a poignant piece that uses piano bases under a moving violin melody. The track is a tribute to the great Indian musicians that passed away and conveys a sense of loss and yearning for their voice and talent, wishing to bring back the magic they weaved through their music.
