ODE TO ONE’S OWN SELF

While a pan shot shows the protagonist Lehar Khan who visibly looks devastated, staring at the ceiling, the viewers become attentive of her next brutal move. She tries to give up, but life has another plan for her. Instead of her life coming to an end, we see her getting transported to her younger self (Jia Seth), quite literally. Along with the soothing vocals of Vaibhav Sharma, and the introductory musicals by Anish Nair and Saurav Dutta, the audience knows they are in for a masterful and sublime performance.

It is important that we refer to the trauma and understand why the protagonist chose their initial path. The process of accepting a person’s trauma has always been both difficult and neglected. We all strive for the ultimate happiness and healing, but there’s another side to it, a trauma that derails this progression, causes suffering and conflicts. The same is seen inAe Dil,’ in context to the protagonist wanting to paint and the constant turmoil in her house.

While we hear the lyrics, “Tu Khud Mein Kaid Hai, Khud Hi Mein Hai Chupa,” the story unfolds a passion within us all, following the strings of the guitar. Sharing his thoughts about the music video’s storyline, the vocalist Vaibhav Sharma said,

“Our Director Vidar Joshi was pretty neat at telling stories. He gave a visual of the first scene to me and Anish, where the protagonist tries to give up her life, fails, and falls, but in her past. I could never have imagined it! And then we stuck to his idea totally.”

DEFYING THE TRAUMA

Talking about drawing inspirations to write this piece, Vaibhav explained,

“Being an artist, you come across many ideas. This song just happened to me similarly. Maybe I was in that state of mind! I did not consciously write it, but it helped!”

The song in the second half takes a sharp turn from the tone of repentance, to letting go and keep moving in life. This was well conveyed by the vocals, use of instruments and vocal harmonies done to its fullest. It is imperative that we mention the skill the entire cast has shown, even with its coloured undertones. The colour palettes used are extremely well thought and befitting.

“We were supposed to be the symbol of hope.”

Remarked Sourav Dutta, the man behind the drums. Right at this moment, someone somewhere is dejected in life, thinking of ending everything. Ae Dil is the medicine to those injured hearts, who are afraid to take a step further, because no one mentioned it is okay to feel so.

THE MADMAST ELEMENT

“The thing with our lyrics is that the words are timeless and simple! We have seen that even in the music from the early 1950s. In simple language, our song talks about things everyone goes through and there are times when we need a friend. ‘Ae Dil’ is that friend to anyone listening to it,” said the Bassist Anish Nair

When asked about what feel the band envisions to create for its audience, Vaibhav added,

“As song makers, we should be able to affect the audience in a positive way and make them think. That’s what art has done to us too.”

Towards influencing the audience with the right thought and direction, Anish added,

“As independent artists, we play an important role in society with our messaging. We are very much responsible for the messages we carry, since it comes out of our passion.

Madmast is not your regular crew trying to obfuscate people or even show the glitz and glamour. Each of the members is sure of one thing – keeping it simple and showing people the real world, raw and pure. Highly valiant and ‘high on life’ these musical charmers are on their ride to comprehend the delicacy of life!
