From the very first note, “Hum” strikes a chord with its evocative arrangement. Niranjan Menon’s masterful composition paints a vivid picture of reminiscence, where every chord seems to echo the sentiment of days gone by. The Sargam sequences, delicately woven into the melody, are undoubtedly the highlight of the piece. These intricate vocal runs add a layer of traditional beauty to the track, making it something you’ll find yourself eagerly anticipating with each replay.
The instrumentation is equally commendable, with Hersh Desai’s mixing and sound engineering creating a rich, immersive soundscape. The blend of Akshat Khari, Nihal Azad and Nigel Fernandes’ solos, along with the guest vocals from Kiara Fernandes offers a lush, harmonious experience that’s both soothing and stirring. Each vocal contribution adds a different shade to the emotional palette of the song, making it a well-rounded and complete musical experience.
However, while the composition and instrumentation are top-notch, there is one area where the song could benefit from refinement: lyrical diction. The lyrics, penned by Archit Vashishth, are undoubtedly poetic and deep, perfectly complementing the song’s overall mood. While the lyrics were infused with emotions, there are moments where the clarity of words becomes an issue. This slight lack of enunciation can make it difficult for listeners to fully grasp the lyrical depth on the first few listens. Appropriate and well suited projection of the lyrics (that the song demands) could certainly call for an enhanced and improved listening experience.
That said, “Hum” remains a powerful piece, a musical journey that pulls you into its world of introspection and yearning. It’s a song that grows on you, revealing more of its layers with each listen. Menon’s ability to create such an emotionally resonant track makes his talent as both a composer and a storyteller glaring to even the novice ears.
