How many times have you heard music that makes you want to kick your boots and just let loose on your sofa, light a couple of scented candles while your head sways to the tune of the music with your eyes closed? We’re sure there aren’t a lot of songs that come to your mind. Somehow, Sijya’s latest EP, ‘Young Hate’ seems to fill that gap.

It’s a unique revelation of the artist that she is and makes you want to dive a little deeper while you wish to keep your head afloat. ‘Young Hate’ comprises 6 tracks that nudge towards the nostalgia of a sweeter, simpler time, with its share of bittersweet memories. The EP, presented by Accidental Records, headed by Matthew Herbert, was released on 2nd December 2022. It has 6 distinct tracks namely: ‘Stonefruit’, ‘Another Thing’, ‘No Words’, ‘52’, ‘Clear’ and ‘Tell Me’. Each track boasts a different flavor while being within the thematic boundary of the EP as a whole.

Sijya has a strong presence in the New Delhi music landscape. Interestingly, she’s also a trained graphic designer, working closely with the local platform boxout.fm. Her first track, ‘Have To Make My Bed’ came out in late 2021, on the widely acclaimed SUCHI Selects compilation, which drew attention and international support from the likes of Tom Ravenscroft (BBC Radio 6 Music), Crack Magazine, DJ MAG, Rolling Stone India and Wild City. ‘Young Hate’ was also featured in Rolling Stone’s ‘Fresh Indie Fridays’ list.

Sijya, also a composer and producer, beautifully combines art and music as she lays down textural abstractions of her inner monologue onto musical and visual canvases alike. Her creative outlook toward music seems fresh, honest, and pure as she creates ambient, downtempo, and art-pop music, a laud-worthy blend indeed.

The tracks feature original laconic, minor key chords helmed by loping, scuffed beats with a rounded low end. The lush vocals are dreamy and add phenomenally to the element of the music that we would find synonymous with Sijya Gupta in the coming times.

‘Stonefruit’ has to be our favorite pick. The layered melody is so iconic! It invites you to explore creativity, invoking a curiosity toward the backstory. Although ‘Another Thing’ is a little punchy compared to ‘Stonefruit’, its refreshing downtempo rhythm is maintained. The recurring beats and the smooth vocals impress. Sijya introduces a chill vibe through ‘No Words’. If you are an ardent Blues fan, you would appreciate Sijya’s music and tracks even more. The variations in compositions and beats appear captivating.

Sijya proves her vocal prowess through ‘52’, which seems to be laced with western influences. The sound design is especially impressive in this one. Similarly, ‘Clear’ features a swoon-worthy layering of music as the vocals win hearts. ‘Tell Me’ seems to have liberated Sijya as an artist as she adds a darker undertone to the track that features a powerful, electronic vocal supported by a moving music video.

Sijya Gupta and her artistic friends win over listeners and viewers alike with their body of work. Artist Urvi Vora, Improper.tv animators Mehr and Aditya, upcoming filmmakers Bhushitendu and Subodh, and artist Annette Jacob have done a phenomenal job of bringing her thoughts to life with such artistic videos with impeccable promise.

All her tracks have abstract artwork and depiction that seems to deliver a lot about how and what she thinks through her musical expressions. With the promise she has shown with her debut EP, it wouldn’t take long for this ‘Magnetic Fields Festival performer’ to take over your playlist! Go, listen now!
