Taylor Swift has cemented her place in music history by being crowned the IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of the Year for a record-breaking fifth time, and for the third consecutive year. This achievement underscores Swift’s unparalleled global dominance in the music industry. The IFPI’s prestigious award, which considers physical sales, downloads, and streaming figures, definitively positions Swift as the world’s biggest-selling artist.
This remarkable fifth win for Swift follows her previous triumphs in 2014, 2019, 2022, and 2023. No other artist has come close to matching this feat. Since the inception of the award 12 years ago, only Drake (2016 and 2018) and BTS (2020 and 2021) have managed multiple wins, further highlighting the significance of Swift’s accomplishment.
Swift’s dominance extends beyond just the overall artist award. Her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, has swept the IFPI charts, leading the Global Album Chart, Global Vinyl Album Chart, Global Streaming Album Chart, and Global Album Sales Chart. This clean sweep demonstrates the widespread appeal of Swift’s music across all formats.
“We are immensely proud to award the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award to Taylor Swift for the fifth time, as she continues to redefine the limits of global success,” said Victoria Oakley, CEO of IFPI. Oakley emphasized the magnitude of Swift’s year and the incredible connection fans worldwide have with her extensive catalog.
The “Taylor Swift Effect” has become a recognized phenomenon, with economists and analysts noting the significant cultural and economic impact of her Eras Tour. The tour, which saw stadiums packed around the globe throughout 2024, undoubtedly contributed to Swift’s success in the IFPI charts. The excitement generated by her live performances translated into increased streaming activity across her entire discography, demonstrating the powerful synergy between touring and music consumption.
Swift’s influence on vinyl sales is also noteworthy. Her albums 1989 (Taylor’s Version), Midnights, folklore, evermore, and Lover all landed in the top 20 of the IFPI’s 2024 Global Vinyl Album Chart, with 1989 (Taylor’s Version) taking the top spot. This impressive showing reflects Swift’s popularity among vinyl collectors and her ability to drive sales in this format.
While Swift dominated the charts, other artists also made their mark. Zach Bryan and Sabrina Carpenter both achieved their first top 10 placements in the Global Recording Artist Chart. Additionally, Noah Kahan, Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, and Teddy Swims all secured spots on the Global Streaming Album Chart for the first time.
K-Pop continued to have a strong presence on the Global Album Sales Chart, while Chinese artist Zhou Shen and Japanese group Snow Man made inroads into the top 20. These diverse entries highlight the global reach of the music industry and the increasing popularity of various genres.
