Abbey Road Studios has announced the return of its annual Equalise Festival for 2025, marking its sixth edition with a week-long celebration from March 3-8. Coinciding with International Women’s Day, the festival will host a series of immersive recording workshops designed to empower young female and non-binary creatives in the music industry.
This year’s program features hands-on learning opportunities with rising artists such as Aziya, Divorce, Man/Woman/Chainsaw, Fiona-Lee, and Flowerovlove, with one final act yet to be announced. Each artist will record a new piece of music during their studio session, while aspiring engineers and producers will have the chance to observe and learn from the creative process. The sessions will be overseen by producer and harmonica player Sarah Meyz, alongside Abbey Road’s assistant engineer Marta Di Nozzi.
A Platform for Underrepresented Voices
The festival aims to address the gender imbalance in music production and engineering, where less than 5% of professionals are female. Since its inception in 2020, Equalise has been committed to fostering diversity and inclusion through events tied to International Women’s Day, Pride, and Trans Day of Visibility. Sally Davies, Abbey Road’s Managing Director, expressed her pride in the program’s growth, stating, “Equalise plays a vital role in creating opportunities for talented young women and non-binary individuals. By providing access to our facilities and mentorship, we hope to empower the next generation to shape the sound of tomorrow.”
How to Participate
Aspiring participants can enter a ballot to secure a spot in the workshops by submitting their work via the official form on Abbey Road’s website. The deadline for entries is February 23 at 11:59 PM, with winners notified on February 24. The festival is free to attend, offering a unique opportunity for young creatives to gain firsthand experience in one of the world’s most iconic recording studios.
A Legacy of Innovation and Inclusion
Abbey Road Studios, renowned for hosting legendary artists like The Beatles, Oasis, and Lady Gaga, continues to champion innovation and inclusivity. Last year, the studio hosted the Mercury Prize ceremony, further cementing its status as a cultural landmark. The Equalise Festival is a testament to Abbey Road’s commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering a supportive community for underrepresented voices in music.
