Charli XCX, riding high on the phenomenal success of her 2024 album “Brat,” has announced a surprising shift in her career path. Despite leading the BRIT Awards with six nominations and securing five major wins, including Best Artist, Album, and Song of the Year, she plans to take a break from music to focus on acting. This announcement has left fans both surprised and intrigued.
The “Brat” album, which became an unofficial anthem for many, garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards, including three Grammys, a Billboard Music Award, and a Mercury Prize. Its impact was so profound that it even sparked a cultural movement dubbed “Brat summer.” However, Charli XCX has expressed that the very success of “Brat” has created a unique pressure, a “curse” as she put it, with future projects inevitably being compared to this landmark album.
“It’s probably no music for quite a while,” Charli XCX revealed to The Sun. “I also want to act now. I’m already there and thinking about that stuff a little bit more.” This decision comes as she has already been building an impressive filmography, having filmed six movies, including a remake of the 1978 horror film “Faces of Death,” the Olivia Wilde-starring erotic thriller “I Want Your Sex,” and the dark comedy “The Gallerist” with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Natalie Portman. She has also appeared in the period fantasy “100 Nights of Hero” alongside Emma Corrin and worked on “Sacrifice,” a film inspired by Joan of Arc, starring Anya Taylor-Joy.
At the BRIT Awards, Charli XCX’s dominance was undeniable. She took home five awards, including Songwriter of the Year, and delivered memorable acceptance speeches. “This is cool—I’m really happy that a song about underwear now has a Brit award, very important stuff,” she quipped after winning Song of the Year for “Guess.” She also emphasized the importance of dance and electronic music, a genre she feels is often underestimated.
Her success at the BRITs has been celebrated by her label, Warner Music UK, with Ed Howard, Co-President of Atlantic Records UK, praising her as “an inspiration and a pioneer.” Tony Harlow, CEO of Warner Music UK, added, “Her international success over the last 18 months has shown that British artists can still resonate with a worldwide audience.”
Despite her musical success, Charli XCX has turned down the opportunity to perform at the BRIT Awards, choosing instead to enjoy the night with friends and family. This decision underscores her desire to step away from the pressures of performance and explore new creative avenues. Her transition to acting is seen as a natural progression by many, given her previous collaborations with SNL and UberEats, which showcased her acting talent. While her fans will miss her musical contributions, they are also excited to see her bring her unique energy and talent to the world of film.
