Chris Martin has announced that Coldplay will conclude their recording career after releasing their twelfth studio album. Coldplay’s tenth album, Moon Music, has achieved significant commercial success, topping the UK charts and outselling the combined sales of the remaining Top 40 albums. The record sold an impressive 237,000 units in its first week, setting a new record for British album debuts since Adele’s 30 in 2021.
In response to the album’s success, Coldplay expressed their gratitude on social media, thanking their fans for their support. With this achievement, Coldplay has joined an elite group of artists, including ABBA, Michael Jackson, and Queen, each with ten number one albums on the UK charts. The Beatles remain the record holders with sixteen chart-topping albums.
Despite the album’s overall success, Moon Music has not generated substantial streaming numbers. The majority of its sales were on physical formats like CDs and vinyl, totaling approximately 209,000 units. However, the songs “Feels Like I’m Falling In Love” and “We Pray” were popular enough to enter the Top 20 of the singles chart.
Coldplay has been actively promoting Moon Music through various creative channels. In celebration of their 25th anniversary, the band hosted a segment on the shopping channel QVC and made a surprise appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show, with Chris Martin disguised as a struggling busker. Additionally, Martin delighted a 70-year-old fan during a record store event in New York by serenading her on her birthday.
Their promotional efforts have extended beyond traditional channels. In Brooklyn, Chris Martin spontaneously composed a new song after a fan mistakenly requested “Fix It” instead of “Fix You.” The band’s appearances on Saturday Night Live and the Today show, including a memorable performance with puppets, have positioned them to top the US Billboard charts this week.
If successful, Coldplay will become the first British band in eight years to simultaneously hold the number one spot on both the UK and US charts. The last act to achieve this was The 1975 in 2016 with their album ‘I Like It When You Sleep for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It’.
Sabrina Carpenter has achieved a remarkable milestone in the singles chart. The rising pop star has spent a record-breaking 19 weeks at number one in 2024, thanks to her successful singles “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “Taste.” Carpenter surpasses Olivia Newton-John’s previous record of 16 weeks at number one in 1978 and ties Ed Sheeran for the most weeks at number one in a single year this century.
Despite their impressive sales, Coldplay were unable to surpass Taylor Swift’s record for the largest first-week sales of the year in the UK. Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department sold approximately 270,000 copies in its debut week, maintaining her position as the top-selling album of the year.
Inspired by the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, two classic songs have resurfaced in the top 40. Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and Milli Vanilli’s “I’m Gonna Miss You” have made a comeback, with the latter song holding particular significance due to its controversial use at the Menendez brothers’ parents’ funeral. The show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, confirmed the authenticity of this detail, emphasizing its unexpected nature.
