British rock band Coldplay brought their Music of the Spheres World Tour to India, captivating audiences with their electrifying performances. The tour wasn’t just about music, though; Coldplay cleverly incorporated cricket, another passion that unites India, into their shows. This unexpected fusion created a special connection with fans and garnered much attention.
Coldplay’s lead singer, Chris Martin, surprised audiences at their Mumbai concerts by mentioning Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler. Martin even played a clip of Bumrah’s dismissal of England’s Ollie Pope, much to the delight of the crowd. He introduced the clip by saying, “With respect and love for Jasprit, number one in the world, we hope we send love to him by showing you this clip of India destroying England.”
Bumrah, touched by the gesture, responded on social media, writing, “This made me smile! Incredible vibe at the @coldplay concert in Mumbai (from what I’ve seen here) and even more special to be mentioned.”
The playful banter continued during Coldplay’s second Mumbai concert. Martin, feigning seriousness, announced, “I’m so sorry, but I have to read a letter from Jasprit Bumrah’s lawyer. I have to read it because otherwise, we could be sent to prison and wouldn’t be able to perform in Ahmedabad.” The “letter” humorously stated Bumrah’s claim to being the best bowler in the world and playfully called Martin a “silly singer.”
The crowd erupted in cheers when the final day of the Ahmedabad concert arrived, and Bumrah himself appeared in the audience. Martin, ever the showman, wasted no time in acknowledging Bumrah’s presence. He sang a special song for the cricketer, praising him as “my beautiful brother” and the “best bowler in the whole of cricket.” The lyrics playfully lamented, “We do not enjoy watching you destroy England, with wicket, after wicket, after wicket.” The crowd roared with approval, and Bumrah beamed with delight.
This heartwarming exchange between Coldplay and Jasprit Bumrah transcended the boundaries of music and sport, creating a unique moment of connection that resonated with Indian fans. It perfectly exemplified how music can bridge cultures and bring people together.
