Punjabi music sensation Diljit Dosanjh has ignited a fiery debate by boldly challenging the inconsistencies and double standards in state liquor policies. The controversy erupted when the Telangana government issued a notice to the singer, forbidding him from promoting alcohol and drugs in his songs during a Hyderabad concert on November 15th, 2024, about which he decided to speak out during his Ahmedabad concert 2 days later.
The notice, issued by the District Welfare Officer of the Department of Welfare of Women and Children, Disabled and Senior Citizens of Rangareddy district, was based on a complaint filed by a resident of Chandigarh, over 2000 kilometers away. This raises questions about the rationale behind such a long-distance intervention and the selective application of censorship. This person, despite being thousands of kilometers away, managed to influence a local official to take action against a singer’s performance. This is unusual because typically, local authorities handle issues within their jurisdiction. The fact that a remote complaint could lead to such a decision highlights the potential for misuse of authority or overreach.
Dosanjh responded with both defiance and strategic cleverness. Not only did he comply with the notice by subtly modifying his song lyrics, but he also seized the opportunity to expose the stark hypocrisy of state liquor policies. By replacing references to alcohol with innocuous alternatives like “Coke,” or by replacing the word ‘thekee’ (liquor shop) with hotel, Dosanjh brilliantly highlighted the absurdity of censoring artistic expression while simultaneously profiting from liquor sales.
During his Ahmedabad concert, Dosanjh further escalated his challenge by calling for a “Dry Nation Movement.” He argued that if all states declared themselves dry, he would stop singing songs about alcohol. He also suggested that states declare dry days on the days of his concerts as a compromise. A crucial factor bolstering Dosanjh’s argument is his personal commitment to a sober lifestyle. As a non-drinker, he is uniquely positioned to challenge the normalization of alcohol consumption within popular culture. By refusing to promote alcohol in his music, he underscores the hypocrisy of governments that both regulate alcohol consumption and reap significant revenue from its sale.

During a concert in Ahmedabad, a dry state, he refused to sing songs that referenced alcohol, stating, “I am just singing a song. I do not call up people to ensure they had their Patiala peg.” The singer, himself a teetotaler, further challenged states to declare themselves dry, promising to abstain from singing alcohol-themed songs. He highlighted the irony of liquor stores remaining open during the COVID-19 lockdown while other businesses were shut down. Dosanjh also proposed declaring Amritsar, the holy city of Sikhs, a dry zone, emphasizing the need for consistency in liquor policies. His actions have sparked a nationwide debate on the double standards and contradictions within state liquor regulations.
The incident has also brought to the forefront the delicate balance between artistic expression and government regulation. While states possess the authority to regulate public behavior, the question arises as to whether such regulations should extend to artistic expression. In this specific instance, the government’s attempt to censor song lyrics raises concerns about the potential for broader censorship and the suppression of creative freedom.
Dosanjh’s challenge highlights the complex relationship between state liquor policies and public health. While many states have implemented measures to curb alcohol consumption, the reality is that alcohol remains a significant source of revenue for these governments. This is particularly evident in states like Telangana, which earned over Rs 2,600 crore last year just in application fees for liquor licenses.
Gujarat, often hailed as the land of Mahatma Gandhi, is a dry state. However, the state presents a paradox. While alcohol is banned for the general public, it is readily available in 5-star hotels and duty-free shops at the Ahmedabad airport. Moreover, the GIFT City, a special economic zone, permits alcohol consumption, a stark contrast to the rest of the state. Interestingly, Diljit Dosanjh’s recent concert was held in this very zone.
This dichotomy highlights the impracticality of a complete alcohol ban. Despite the official restrictions, many locals have found ways to access alcohol, albeit at a higher cost. Dosanjh’s bold stance has sparked a wider discourse on the role of artists in society and the impact of government policies on cultural expression.
By leveraging his platform to challenge the status quo, he has demonstrated the immense power of individual action to effect social change. His defiant challenge has not only ignited a nationwide debate but has also inspired countless fans to question the underlying motives of government policies. As the debate continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Dosanjh’s courageous challenge will lead to a reevaluation of state liquor policies and a greater appreciation for artistic freedom.
