It was reported by Android Authority that Google is developing a Spotify extension for its AI assistant, Gemini. This news follows the recent launch of a YouTube Music extension for Gemini, suggesting the tech giant is expanding the assistant’s music control capabilities. The discovery was made by analyzing code within the Google app (version v15.22.29.29.arm64), which revealed references to a Spotify integration for Gemini codenamed Robin.
What Does Spotify’s Ties With Gemini Look Like?
The functionality of the upcoming Spotify extension for Gemini is expected to mirror that of the existing YouTube Music extension. Users will likely be able to control playback on Spotify, request specific playlists or artists, and potentially manage their Spotify library through voice commands to Gemini. This includes accessing playback history and other preferences. Code analysis by Android Authority revealed the codename “Robin” used for Gemini within the Google app, further supporting the development of a Spotify integration. Additionally, strings mentioning “Spotify requires sign in” and “Starting to play on Spotify” were discovered, solidifying the rumors of a future Spotify extension for Gemini.
How Is Google Bringing YouTube Music Extension to Gemini Benefiting Users?
In a move to boost competitiveness with AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google recently introduced a YouTube Music extension for its AI tool, Gemini. This extension enhances Gemini’s functionality by allowing users to control their music library through simple voice commands. This creates a seamless and integrated music experience.
With the YouTube Music extension, Gemini users can now connect their accounts, granting them easy access and control over their music library using voice prompts. Importantly, both accounts must be linked for the extension to work.
The extension offers a wide range of voice commands. Users can request music by specifying songs, albums, artists, playlists, genres, and more. For example, a user could say “play me rock music radio” or “play music that I like,” which would trigger playback from their Liked Songs playlist. Once a command is given, Gemini displays a card with relevant information such as album art, artist name, song duration, and play count.
