Following the resounding success of Coldplay’s recent concerts in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has championed the development of India’s “concert economy,” recognizing its immense potential to boost the nation’s economic and cultural landscape. He urged state governments and private sector stakeholders to invest in the necessary infrastructure and skills to capitalize on this burgeoning sector.

Addressing the ‘Utkarsh Odisha – Make in Odisha Conclave 2025’ in Bhubaneswar, PM Modi highlighted India’s rich heritage of music, dance, and storytelling, coupled with a massive youth population eager for live entertainment, as key drivers of the concert economy’s growth. “A country that has such a rich heritage of music, dance, and storytelling and a huge pool of youngsters who are big consumers of concerts, there are many possibilities in the concert economy,” he stated. He pointed to the “fabulous pictures” of the Coldplay concerts as evidence of the massive scope for such events in India, emphasizing the growing demand for live experiences in the country over the past decade.

Coldplay’s “Music of the Spheres” tour in India, featuring five sold-out shows, three in Mumbai and two in Ahmedabad, shattered records and captivated audiences. The Ahmedabad concerts, particularly the Republic Day performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium, drew a staggering 134,000 attendees, making it the largest stadium concert in India to date, even surpassing George Strait’s Texas record of 110,905 attendees. The tour’s estimated revenue of ₹133.2 crore further underscores the economic power of live music events.

PM Modi stressed that the concert economy extends beyond mere entertainment, providing a significant boost to the tourism sector and creating numerous job opportunities. He called upon states and the private sector to focus on developing the infrastructure and skills needed for event management, artist grooming, security, and other related areas. “Concert economy gives a boost to the tourism sector and creates jobs. I urge states and the private sector to focus on infrastructure and skills needed for the concert economy. Event management, artist grooming, security and other arrangements have a scope,” he emphasized.

The Prime Minister also noted that India is attracting major international artists, signaling the country’s growing prominence on the global music scene. He expects this trend to continue, further fueling the growth of the concert economy. He also teased the upcoming World Audio-Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in India, showcasing the country’s creative prowess to the world.

The success of Coldplay’s tour, along with other recent high-profile concerts by international and Indian artists, highlights the potential for India to become a major player in the global live entertainment market. Diljit Dosanjh’s “Dil-Luminati Tour,” Bryan Adams’ concerts, Dua Lipa’s performance, and other events have demonstrated the growing appetite for live music experiences across the country. Reports suggest that the live events sector in India could reach ₹143 billion by 2026, with large concerts (over 5,000 attendees) increasing significantly.

The “concert economy” encompasses a wide range of economic activities, from ticket sales and merchandise to hospitality, transportation, and local businesses that benefit from increased foot traffic. Hotels experience near-full occupancy during concert periods, flight and train bookings surge, and food delivery services see a spike in orders. Moreover, large-scale events generate employment opportunities in various related fields.

PM Modi’s push for the concert economy signals a recognition of its potential to not only generate revenue but also enhance India’s cultural image on the world stage. By investing in the necessary infrastructure and skills, India can attract more international artists, create jobs, boost tourism, and further solidify its position as a vibrant hub for arts and entertainment.
