Shillong’s Musical Milestone: Ed Sheeran’s Unforgettable Night: Shillong, often referred to as the “Rock Capital of India,” witnessed a historic moment as global music icon Ed Sheeran took the stage at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on February 12, 2025. The concert, part of his + – = ÷ x Tour, drew over 30,000 fans from across the country, solidifying Shillong’s reputation as a hub for music tourism. Thanks to a ₹4,000 crore investment from the state government in music tourism infrastructure, the city is ready to host world-class concerts.
The evening began with an electrifying performance by Kayan, a multi-talented singer and DJ, who set the stage for Sheeran’s highly anticipated act. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the stadium buzzed with excitement. Sheeran, donning a custom “Shillong” T-shirt, greeted the crowd with warmth, saying, “Shillong, how are you feeling? Thank you for coming. It’s my first time here, and I’m so happy to be here!”
A Night of Hits and Heartfelt Moments
Sheeran kicked off the concert with Castle on the Hill, instantly igniting the crowd’s energy. The setlist was a perfect blend of his chart-topping hits and emotional ballads, including Shape of You, Bad Habits, Perfect, and Photograph. Each song was performed live, with Sheeran using his signature loop station to create layered, real-time compositions that left the audience in awe.
One of the most poignant moments came during A Team, a song Sheeran wrote at 18. Reflecting on its journey, he shared, “I never imagined I’d be performing this song in front of such an incredible audience 15 years later.” The crowd’s thunderous sing-along to Perfect nearly drowned out Sheeran’s voice, prompting him to declare, “Shillong, you are by far the loudest audience!”
Breaking Stereotypes and Setting New Benchmarks
The concert shattered the stereotype that Meghalaya is only a destination for retired international artists. Fans from across India flocked to Shillong, proving that the Northeast is ready to host global music icons. Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh emphasized the state’s growing role in India’s music tourism sector, stating, “Meghalaya has become a trendsetter in the concert economy.”
The state government’s investment of ₹4,000 crore in music tourism infrastructure has paid off, with Shillong emerging as a preferred destination for large-scale events. The concert’s success has opened doors for more international artists to explore the region’s vibrant music scene.
Challenges and Triumphs
While the event was a resounding success, a few logistical challenges surfaced. Some attendees faced issues with topping up their cashless bands due to network congestion, a common problem at large-scale concerts. However, the overall experience was seamless, thanks to meticulous planning by district authorities. Security measures included three checkpoints, with police and event security teams ensuring a safe environment. Attendees were allowed to carry only mobile phones, keys, and wallets, streamlining the entry process.
A Legacy of Music and Community
Ed Sheeran’s Shillong concert was more than just a performance – it was a celebration of music, community, and cultural exchange. The artist’s genuine connection with the audience, combined with his raw, live performances, created an unforgettable experience.
As the final notes of Bad Habits echoed through the stadium, the crowd’s energy remained palpable, a testament to the magic of live music. Sheeran’s visit has not only left an indelible mark on Shillong’s musical legacy but also set the stage for a brighter future for music tourism in Northeast India.
