Google Unveils “Instrument Playground”: AI-Powered Music Creation Tool for the Holidays. As the festive season approaches, Google Arts & Culture Lab unveils a novel AI experiment – “Instrument Playground”. This innovative tool, created by artist-in-residence Simon Doury, empowers users to craft music inspired by over 100 instruments from across the globe. This tool is an inspiration for musicians as it has sounds of instruments from around the globe.

FUELING CREATIVITY WITH 100 INSTRUMENTS
Instrument Playground draws its musical knowledge from an impressive array of 100 instruments, spanning diverse regions like India’s Veena, China’s Dizi, and Zimbabwe’s Mbria. Users can unleash their inner composer by simply selecting desired instruments, prompting the AI to generate a 20-second musical snippet. This marks another exciting development following Google’s public release of the MusicLM text-to-music AI tool in May.

A preview of the tool:

THE SOUNDSCAPE
To refine their musical creations, users can add adjectives such as “moody,” “happy,” or “romantic” to their prompts. As mentioned in Google’s blog post, festive jingles can be easily crafted by incorporating terms like “merry” or “joyful.” Taking creative control further, the tool allows users to manipulate the generated sound clip by selecting modes like “Ambient,” “Beat,” or “Pitch,” each offering unique sonic textures.

ADVANCED MUSIC MAKING
For those seeking deeper exploration, Instrument Playground offers an “Advanced Mode” sequencer. This feature empowers users to layer and loop up to four instruments, unlocking a world of sonic possibilities. Google has even pre-composed festive jingles to inspire users, including the jingley “Chime Chime Ya” and the Santa Claus-themed “Ho Ho Ho,” which features a captivating blend of “festive church bells” and “heavenly gongs.”

Instrument Playground is readily accessible online, offering a platform for anyone to explore their musical creativity. While some users may encounter occasional glitches or limitations, like the rejection of prompts referencing specific artists, the overall experience remains engaging and inspiring. This innovative AI tool marks a significant step forward in democratizing music creation, offering a unique and accessible platform for anyone to embrace their inner musician and celebrate the festive season with a touch of musical magic.
