It won’t come across as a surprise if you’re told that BTS is one of the biggest (and best) things that has happened in this decade. Whether or not you follow Korean entertainment, you definitely would’ve watched the boys setting the stage on fire with their moves, while singing songs that have broken all Billboard records. Here’s a look into some of the interesting fun facts of one of the decades greatest musical collectives, BTS!

BTS was not always ‘Beyond The Scenes’

While everyone has heard the term ‘BTS,’ many don’t really know what it stands for. It’s Bangtan Sonyeondan, a Korean phrase that means ‘bulletproof boy scouts.’ In 2017, however, BTS announced that its name would also stand for ‘beyond the scene’ as part of its new brand identity. Other names that were considered for the group names were “Big Kidz” and “Young Nation.”

 

BTS was created by an agency

BTS members were created by an agency named Big Hit Entertainment. They started to select singers in 2010 with several auctions. The band was actually supposed to be a hip-hop group but the CEO of Big Hit Entertainment dropped the initial plan and instead went further with the idea of an idol band. 

 

BTS is not an overnight success

BTS once had financial difficulties despite being now a cultural icon and having over 40M Spotify streams monthly. They once shared a one-room apartment, as weird as it may sound. It took the band around 3 years to gain recognition; they were not an overnight sensation. For the group, Big Hit Entertainment held auditions in 2010.

 

They bring big bucks to the South Korean economy!

One in every 13 people who visited South Korea in 2017 was there because of BTS. That means 800 thousand tourists in one year. They are also responsible for one billion dollars in exports, with BTS products, such as cosmetics and clothes. They have also donated millions of won to welfare causes like the Black Lives Matter campaign, schools and child funds. They were the first artists in South Korea to raise social funds for a global campaign.

 

BTS hiatus news crashed HYBE stock by 28%

When BTS team members took a hiatus to work on individual projects without even breaking up the group, the stocks of HYBE, the company that controls BTS’s label crashed by 28% ​​wiping out as much as $1.7 billion in market value. They announced an indefinite hiatus on June 14 , 2022.

 

BTS is the only K-pop Act to Get Its Own Twitter Emoji

In 2016 just three years after their debut, they received their own unique Twitter emoji. BTS was the first and the only K-pop group to have that. In May and June, fans were able to use a variety of hashtags featuring a small image of BTS’ bulletproof-vest logo. They have a whopping 46.5 MILLION followers on twitter as of today.

 

BTS Members Aren’t Just K-pop Singer

Each of the seven members of BTS has their fair share of writing credits for their songs, with rappers Suga and Rap Monster in particular emerging as producers. The group has co-written the majority of their songs with Korean producer Pdogg and Slow Rabbit to create their distinct hip-hop-infused dance style. Rappers Rap Monster and Suga each made deeply personal mixtapes that showcased their unique styles, demonstrating that the group is more than just your average pop boy band.
