‘Squeaky Clean’ Is Peekay’s Topping to a Nostalgic Year End

When your year ends and flashbacks grapple your mind, Peekay’s way of taking you down memory lane, was through her latest single “Squeaky Clean”. This fresh R&B Soul/Pop production distorts the tedious present and offers a window into our childhood lives.

It surely is not possible to replay our lives back to the days of innocence or child-like wonder of worldly mechanisms. Yet, Pranati Khanna aka Peekay with her song “Squeaky Clean” manages to recapture some of its essences through its look back on the past. The unique puerility of old times and innate innocence due to the lack of worldly experiences sum up the experience of listening to the song. The experience is enviable contrary to the jaded or cynical world around us. The overall joyous energy that oozes out through the screen as well as the beautiful vocals reflect the artist’s sentiment regarding her throwback to the old days.

The cinematography of the music video is apt and befitting. Shot under the gleaming sun rays summons your memory of the days of summer vacations with our friends. The radiance beams throughout the screen while the characters visibly look happy and content, playing the games associated with the insouciant days.

On one of Pranati’s social media handles she dedicates this song to her sister. This inadvertently points out her inspiration for making the song, all the childhood games, shared memories, and carefree energy is what the artist in Pranati yearns for. Imbued with emotive power and a rich timbre, Pranati’s vocalizations remind us of her previous ventures especially “Sunshine On The Street”. The following lyrics ‘I got sunshine inside of me’ is probably a hint to the child within, without the experience of the worldly ordeal or bias.

In one of her interviews, Pranati explains the song, “Squeaky Clean basically means a clean slate. The lyrics and feel of the video are about a phase when I was confused about everything. There were certain traumas that I was overwhelmed with and I just wanted to clear things in my life. I did that and started a new chapter with a blank page”.

Pranati Khanna, widely known as Peekay, has made a reputation for herself for almost a decade. She was the lead singer of the well-known indie rock group Spell Check (formerly The Ragamuffins) and has been actively working to promote jazz and pop music through her style of creating music. Khanna’s debut in her single named, “Good, old Fashioned in Love,” was released during the 2020 lockdown in collaboration with the Grammy-nominated producer, Jonathan Anand Wesley. Her second release, “Dunno,” was a direct commentary on life during the lockdown and it was produced by her bandmate and highly regarded producer Jonathan Edward, also hailing from Hyderabad. The year 2021 saw Peekay release “Much Better,” a really catchy dance track with Jonathan Wesley, and “You Don’t Have To,” featuring Jonathan Edward in it.

The joyous and upbeat composition pumps energy into the track that sparkles memories and imbues a celebratory vibe. The mellow, shadowy R&B pop-jazz texture gets the toes tapping and instantly clicks with the audience bringing on a playful, exuberant energy. “Squeaky Clean” was released on 23rd December 2022 and is available across various streaming platforms.
